A few answers to the most often asked questions about the Salvo range of lights.

Most of all, "What is HID" ?

High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting technology replaces the filament of the light bulb with a capsule of gas. The light is emitted from an arc discharge between two closely spaced electrodes hermetically sealed inside a small quartz glass tubular envelope capsule.

To operate, they require "ballasts", which supply a constant voltage and control current. The amount of light produced is greater than a standard halogen bulb, while at the same time consuming less power, and more closely approximating the color temperature of natural daylight.

After my first couple of dives with the light I notice some condensation on the inside of the lamp cover, is this a problem ?
No this is due to a small amount of humidity introduced when your light was assembled, this will disappear after a cpl of dives.

Does my light need charging when I get it ?
Your light will be virtually fully charged when it leaves us, it may need a few minutes just to bring it back up to maximum. Please remove the battery from the canister when charging.

How long can I leave it switched on out of the water ?
You should not leave your light on out of the water for more than 2-3 minutes, you should not strike it on and off in quick succession either. HID bulbs should be allowed to cool before restriking them, you should leave 20-30 secs as a gap.

Can I upgrade my light ?
You can indeed. The options open to you are various , depending upon which Salvo you currently own. Please contact us via mail or phone to discuss the options you have available to you.

Do you do upgrades to other manufacturers lights ?
Yes, we can supply upgrades to the Halcyon range of lights, these come in different forms, please call or mail us for the options you have which of course depend upon the light you currently own.

How do I change my bulb ?
Carefully remove the lamp cover by gently pulling it off with a twisting motion. It is best to use a glove or wrap the lamp cover with a small towel to protect your hand from accidental breakage of the glass

Remove the bulb from the socket and extend it to the end of the lead wires. Carefully unplug the bulb from the wires leading into the ballast body

Connect the new bulb to the lead wires coming from the ballast

Reinstall the bulb into the socket, twist the bulb a 1/4 turn as you do so to help the wires back into the

socket

Holding the lamp cover with a towel or a glove reistall the lamp cover with a slight twisting motion. The first 2 o-rings do the sealing the bottom one is there as a bumper and is not part of the seal.

DO NOT use grease on the lamp cover o-rings, this will cause the lamp cover to push back off with the air pressure inside.

Never remove the lamp cover unnecessarily, most bulb breakages occur from unnecessary removal of lamp covers.

How do I care for my Lithium Ion Batteries ?

Your Li-Ion battery is 14.8 volts nominal. A fully charged Li-Ion battery will show between 16.6 and 17volts fully charged

To charge the Li-Ion battery, connect the charger to the wall outlet and then connect the other end of the charge to the battery. A solid red light indicates the battery is charging. A solid green light indicates the battery is charged

Li-Ion batteries hold a charge for a long period of time. If you connect the battery to the charger and the light stays green, it is because the battery is fully charged. You can discharge the battery for a few minutes to make the charger register a low enough voltage to begin the charging process

Each Li-Ion battery pack contains IC chips to insure both over charge and over discharge protection. It is not necessary to leave the battery connected to the charger after the charging process

There is evidence to show that leaving the Li-Ion battery at about 30% charge will extend the life of the battery. It is best to store the battery in a cool dry place. Li-Ion batteries are rated at maintaining 80% capacity after 300 cycles under normal use

You should always charge your battery before a dive to insure a full charge

Li-Ion batteries do not develop a memory.

How should I care for my NIMH batteries ?

Depending on the model of light you have, the battery is either 12 volt nominal or 14.4 volt nominal. A fully charged 12 volt NIMH battery will show between 13.8 and 14.2 volts. A fully charged 14.4 volt NIMH battery will show between 16.4 and 16.8 volts

To charge the NIMH battery, connect the charger to the wall outlet, then connect the other end of the charge to the battery. A solid red light indicates the battery is charging. A solid green light indicates the battery is charged

You should always charge the NIMH battery after you have completed your dive. Leaving a NIMH battery in a discharged state can cause damage It is not necessary to fully discharge a NIMH battery before charging. NIMH batteries do not have a memory

It is ok to leave the charge connected to the battery, it will not over charge it. It is not necessary to leave the battery on the charger. We recommend not leaving it on the charger for long storage periods

Before you dive
Make sure the cord and switch boot do not have any cuts or damage

Connect the lid assembly to the battery. The connectors will only go together one way

Make sure you never connect the battery to the lid in reverse polarity as this can cause permanent damage to the ballast

Attach the lid assembly to the canister and make sure the latches are completely secure and locked, fasten both catches simultaneously or you will strain the catch !
Make sure the main O-ring is in place and no wires are protruding form the lid and canister interface

Turn on the light and make sure it comes on. It is best to leave the light on for at least 30 seconds before turning off; "short-striking"
the bulb can cause the life of the bulb to be shorter than normal

If the light fails to strike, turn the switch off and wait 5-15 seconds
    before trying again

Turn off the light and finish preparing for your dive.

After your Dive

Always rinse your gear after a salt-water dive
Before opening the light, make sure you dry any excess water from the lid and canister interface
Disconnect the battery from the lid assembly Never travel with it connected
Check for any water in the canister. If there was any water intrusion, it is best to detect it early
Inspect the cord and switch boot for any damage that may have occurred during your dive
Reinstall the lid assembly to the canister for transport.
